Summary:
Excellent machine. Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Strengths:
Plenty of power. Fairly easy to start. More reliable than the cheaper brands.
Weaknesses:
Black fuel line tends to deteriorate. New green fuel line is much better quality.

Summary:
I have had the FS46 for approximately 4 years, and it has been an excellent trimmer. On average it is used around 5 hours each week during the trimming season, and it still starts up and runs like new. I also have a heavier duty Stihl FS80R Professional trimmer, but my FS46 has been my 'go to' trimmer for everything other than very heavy duty trimming conditions.
The FS45/46 Series are excellent trimmers are an excellent choice for normal residential use, especially when you consider their lower cost.
Strengths:
Lightweight, plenty of power to cut through tall grass, the longer shaft (compared to the FS45) is more comfortable for taller users, and it is much more dependable than many other trimmers in the same price range.
Weaknesses:
I haven't had any problem, except for replacing the original 'black fuel line' with the higher quality 'green line'.

Summary:
Skip it - but a Weedeater brand at Walmart
Strengths:
Nice colors
Weaknesses:
Drive cable broke in first 20 minutes of use. Typical German over-engineered machinery - sophiticated, lots of down time, much like the two Mercedes I have owned. Yes it has a waranty, but I was buying a trimmer to do work - warraties dont trim my lawn. If a good-looking German hooker knocked on my door tonight I'd turn her away because she'd probably have a heart attack. BUY SOMETHING THAT WORKS

Summary:
I'm really down on this model. 4 shop trips in one hour of useage time is excessive.
Strengths:
I don't know yet. I have owned my FS-46 for 3 seasons and have yet to log more than 45 minutes on the thing. It's been in the shop 3 times so far, and has to go back again. I got it back from the shop last weekend.
Weaknesses:
Seems like the carburetor that Stihl uses is junk.

Summary:
My ratings reflect the difficulty in loading the string head, which without string, make it an orange and white lawn ornament!
Strengths:
cute orange color
Weaknesses:
String head. Either I am stupid or this head is junk! I have owned this thing for 7 years, used it less than 10 hours and have spent over 1/2 that time loading the string head or trying to load the string head. A pocket sissors would be more efficient. Runs fine, but who cares when the string keeps coming out, wrapping around the shaft, etc. It is headed to the dealer in the morning with the string wrapped around the shaft. I loaded the head per the instructions, started the trimmer and trimmed 3 feet! The sixth time it went in the back of the truck. It will be on Craig's list if I don't get some satisfaction!

Summary:
The FS46 is a good little unit when it is running the first and second years and with a new tap-&-go head. Otherwise, I would look for another trimmer.
Strengths:
The FS46 seems to have adequate power for light to medium growth, but light sedge and medium height rag weed and others are difficult to impossible to cut with this unit.
Weaknesses:
The tap-&-go head is absolute crap. I replaced the single head with the pre-cut model. This head would "sling" the pre-cut string, regardless of the size used. I finally bought one of the redesigned tap-&-go heads with the divided spool. It worked well until I had to install new line and then the same "weld" problem as with the single spool design. I went to the Stihl website, but kept getting a syntax error when I tried to submit the complaint. It is in the shop now. Seems to be a carb problem...flooding and hard starting.
